Bringing hope and light to those who need it most...
The development of the Resource Centre has been ongoing for the last 3 years. The Resource Centre is situated at the centre of the Kangemi slum - a perfect easy location for all of our schools to access, and close enough for many others to take advantage of.
Project Objectives
To build the capacities of an informal schools supporting association by the creation of a self sustainable Resource Centre
Through the services of the Resources Centre the informal schools in Kangemi area are supported in various ways.
To give access to quality education and nurture interest in ICT
The project will continue to improve the teaching and general skills of teachers and enhance the standards of education of the informal schools.
To give access to knowledge, culture and ICT services to underprivileged communities
Thanks to a library and a computer centre, students and teachers of informal schools and local people from around Kangemi are able to read, learn and communicate with each other, more easily. The Centre is also providing income generating activities to guarantee the sustainability of its services.
To enhance development
In the long term, the purpose of the project is to support informal schools as a source of sustainable development as they have a direct impact on the improvement of living standards of the whole slum population.
The Benefits
Benefits from the Centre include the access of a library and ICT services for informal schools and their local communities, as well as training programs for the community. The Centre will also lobby for the recognition of the represented informal schools by the government.
These benefits have improved the chances of future success for the children and other individuals from the surrounding communities, and it has also led to the development of various indirect benefits including the psychological improvements (increased self-esteem and self-reliance) and improved hygiene and health - an all-round improvement in their quality of life!
The Resource Centre has become a great benefit to so many individuals from within and around the slum. The informal school have found great assistance, counselling, training, teaching and reading material from the centre and at least 10,000 children (around 2,000 of which are orphans – mostly from HIV-AIDS - and many of which coming from single-parented families without any source of income). Schools from communities of bordering slums (e.g. Kawangware and Riruta) are also have access to the knowledge and services that are provided by the Resources Centre.
