In March 2006, OSF EA started researching primary informal schools in and around Nairobi slums
in order to develop a suitable, sustainable strategy that would help improve over all education quality.
The schools targeted in 2006 are located in congested areas without proper sanitation, access to water or electricity. Targeted areas
included Kangemi, Riruta, Uthiru, Mathare, Kawangware and Kibera. Public schools are very rare in these areas and are often too
small to accommodate the increasingly high demand of children wishing to register. The demand is particularly high for those unable
to pay tuition fees.
Frequently, children attending these informal schools come from areas of extreme poverty and many are orphaned (20 to 30%°) or HIV
positive (10 to 20%). Most of the informal schools that OSFEA visited had already been trying to maintain a basic feeding program for
the most extreme cases.

Achieving government recognition
OSF EA also keeps close contacts with the Ministry of Education and the Nairobi City Education Department.
