Background
The NGO Orphelins Sans Frontières was initially created in France in 1994 following the Rwandan genocide. In 2002, the East African section of Orphelins Sans Frontières opened in Nairobi under the French School. However, OSF East Africa was totally independent from OSF France. OSF is registered with the Kenyan authorities as a Kenyan NGO working in the field to help underprivileged children.
Since 2006, Alix d'Ansembourg took over the NGO, as the volunteer Director, and broadened its field activities with the aim of making its actions more sustainable through the support of informal schools and the creation of income generating activities. OSF has an official Board of 3 people and funds from private and public donors.
OSF E A objective is to improve the living conditions of underprivileged children in Nairobi’s slums in an efficient and sustainable manner.
How?
- by making learning environment safer and conducive to teach and learn: through teachers training, infrastructure improvement, feeding programs, educational stationery…
- by providing economic support to local communities
OSF EA has created the Kangemi School Resource Centre and the Mama Africa Workshop

Results
Since 2002, more than 100 institutions and schools in different slums of the city have benefited from OSF’s actions and capacity building support, which represents approximately 600 teachers and more than 15,000 children.
